Antigua
The former capital of Guatemala, Antigua is a town of
astonishing beauty. Romantic and
whimsical, the cobbled streets, multi-colored Spanish buildings, and mysterious
volcanic surrounds, sweep you into a fairytale.
Parque Central is Antigua’s crown jewel - a spacious piazza overflowing in trees, flowers, and charming architectural touches. Rising to the east is the Cathedral Santiago. Swathed in white and showcasing dozens of saintly statues set in recessed nooks, the Cathedral Santiago is pristine. The other three sides of the piazza are adorned in arched walkways, local and national flags and loads of posh restaurants and café’s.

What makes sightseeing even more incredible is the history behind every building. Due to a string of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, most of the city fell to ruin and the title of “capital”, relocated. Over the years, chief civic and religious structures were rebuilt to preserve traditional roots while others were left in ruin. These ruins remind locals and foreigners alike of the cities trying history and are alluring art pieces unto themselves.
It is this mix of old and new, modern and traditional which make Antigua what it is today!
A town with a pulse - a heart that beats for Guatemala but a soul existing only for itself.
